Leeds United 1983/84 campaign will be remembered by the Elland Road faithful as one to forget. The close season saw a trio new faces arrive at Elland Road from north of the border. Striker George McCluskey arrived from Celtic for £161,000, midfielder Andy Watson was signed for £60,000 from Aberdeen and midfielder John Donnelly arrived from Dumbarton. All realistic chance of promotion was lost early doors as the Whites won just two of their first eight league games. The misery was compounded when United were beaten 1-0 at home in the Second Round of the League Cup by Chester who at the time were 92nd of all 92 league clubs. Humiliation was avoided when Leeds won 4-1 in the second leg. And when midfielder John Sheridan broke his leg mid season it turned into a fight against relegation. Leeds pulled the season around thanks to Peter Lorimer pulling the strings in midfield losing only four games in the New Year and they rose up the league to finish tenth. One of the season's highlights was the rise of the club's fledgling youngsters. By the end of the campaign Denis Irwin had established himself at right-back, as had Neil Aspin in central defence, Scott Sellars in midfield and Tommy Wright as an established striker.
