Crews from Gipton station were called to a fire at an address in Bexley Terrace.

When they entered the house, they found it had been set up as a cannabis growing farm.

The cause of the fire was traced to an electrical fault, thought to be linked to heavy demand placed on the system by the marijuana growing operation.

Crews spent about an hour at the scene, from 10.20pm on Monday, and later made a return visit to check the property had been made safe.

The house was empty at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

A police spokeswoman later confired that an illegal cannabis growing "factory" had been found at the address and investigations into those responsible were continuing.
