Bouncy castles, face painting and craft activities were amongst the favourites at the completely free event which boasted a packed programme of entertainment.

In the marquee Jester Jim entertained the crowds with balloon tricks whilst the two puppets shows brought smiles to many faces. Those wanting a bit more "hands on fun" were able to learn some tricks in the circus skills area whilst Daftasadrum's Steve Hill held regular drumming circles.
As usual, the Carnival saw performances by local uniformed groups Rebekah Gray (7) performed with Manston Brownies said " My favourite bit was singing Alice the Camel had 5 humps" . The finale by Jemski Dance Group had people completely spell bound.

The local services turned out in force – delighted youngsters were able to climb aboard the Stanks Fire Engine, others had a chance to get inside the back of a police van and the arrival of mounted police caused great excitement. The "crash dummies" brought by the Road Safety team was a thought provoking display meanwhile, others had their photos taken with 7 foot "Kerby" the road safety mascot. The Youth Service bus, a new attraction for 2008 also had a steady stream of visitors.

Football tournaments ran continuously organised by Rev Grahame Wray, from Christ Church. He said, "We wanted to do something for the older ones and this is always great fun"

Tiny Tim, a fairground organ added to the atmosphere and the nearby barbeque was a roaring success with 700 hot dogs and burgers being given away free. Those preferring not to queue picked up one of the 1500 free ice lollies instead, or opted for one of the free 1000 balloons.

Many visitors to the park were surprised that the activities were all free. Richard Strudwick from St Theresa's church and carnival MC announced – "There are not many places where you get something for free these days – but Crossgates Carnival is one of them"

Around 100 volunteers helped to make the day a success, wearing bright yellow T shirts provided by Crossgates Shopping centre manager, Steve Seymour. Funding for the event comes mainly from the 5 local churches – St Theresa's, St James Manston, Christ Church, Crossgates Methodist and Church in the Home.

The grant form the Council's area committee helps to cover the cost of the food whilst the remainder comes from a charity called Create.

The event was opened by the Lord Mayor Coun Frank Robinson, with local councillors, Peter Gruen, Paulene Grahame and Suzi Armitage also in attendance.

Carnival Coordinator. Karen Gray from Church in The Home, said "Crossgates Carnival just gets bigger and better every year. As churches together we want to show God's love by serving the community in this really practical way. We're really pleased that so many have been able to enjoy a great day out."
