Who Wants to be a Millionaire: how to apply to take part on the game show as it returns to ITV with Jeremy Clarkson as host

Hosted this time by Jeremy Clarkson, Who Wants to be a Millionaire will see six contestants fighting for their chance to win the top prize, with four lifelines – Phone a Friend, 50:50, Ask the Audience, and Ask the Host – to help them. Who Wants to be a Millionaire is one of the most popular and well known British quiz shows in history. The show debuted on 4 September 1998 on ITV, and was hosted by Chris Tarrant, with the original run ending in February 2014. It was then revived in 2018 as part of the 20th anniversary commemorations of the programme, with Jeremy Clarkson confirmed as the new host. After this, ITV renewed the series again, with Jeremy Clarkson still in the hosting seat. The original format of the show saw contestants answering increasingly difficult questions for money, with safety nets positioned at the £1,000 and £32,000 points. The contestants also had three lifelines - 50:50, which removed two incorrect answers, phone a friend which allows the contestant to phone someone to answer the question for them and ask the audience, which sees the audience polled on what they think the correct answer is. With the rebooted version of the show featuring Jeremy Clarkson, there have been some changes made to the format. Contestants are now given a fourth lifeline, ask the host, which allows them to ask Jeremy Clarkson what he thinks the answer is. Clarkson cannot see the answers to the question, so he can only rely on his own knowledge to help. Contestants can also set their own custom monetary safety net - the first one is still set at £1,000 but after this point, the contestant can set their own safety net as they choose, up to the grand prize of £1,000,000. How to apply To register to take part in the next series of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, you’ll need to provide your name, date of birth, email address and a password. Once you’ve registered, you can fill out the application form. The first stage of the online application asks for your personal details. As well as providing your name, address and phone number, you’ll also need to answer more questions about yourself, including: - Your occupation - Any previous jobs you’ve had - Your qualifications - Are you a member of any quiz leagues - Your hobbies - What subjects might you use the “Ask the Host” lifeline for (other than motoring) - How you would describe yourself - Why you think you should be chosen to appear on the show - Whether you’ve been on TV before, or applied for Who Wants to be a Millionaire before - Your social media profiles You’ll also need to disclose your ethnic origin for diversity monitoring purposes, as well as any medical conditions or criminal convictions. The third part of the application is a timed, multiple choice quiz. There are 20 questions and will get harder as they go along. The application form states: “These are all the type of questions that could appear on the show, however none of these will appear on the show. Please read all the questions and answers carefully, and make sure you have answered them all. “Googling answers or asking a friend to help will be considered cheating and will also slow you down. Your time will be taken into account.” Once you’ve completed the quiz, you just need to hit ‘finish’ to submit your application. To register and apply, go to the website. When is the application deadline? The last date that applications will be accepted is 11:59pm on 30 September 2020, so you have plenty of time to get your application in. The ITV website states that this date may be extended at their discretion. Who can apply? Applicants need to be at least 18 years old and a British citizen, or have the right to reside in the UK. You cannot apply if you or any member of your immediate family have been employed or contracted by an officer, director or agent of Stellify Media, Sony Pictures Entertainment, the broadcaster or any associated or affiliated companies connected to the programme within the past year.
