Beech tree causes problems for Cross Gates folk
A Beech tree is causing problems for pedestrians and residents in Cross Gates.
Its roots are pulling up the pavement on the Ring Road at Cross Gates while its branches block light.
Resident Tony O'Brien, 64, first reported the problem shortly after moving into his house 20 years ago.
Although it has been cut back on several occasions while it continues to mature the situation is getting worse said Mr O'Brien.
Beech trees fully mature after 120 years and can grow up to 40 metres in height.
Mr O'Brien said: "The tree is really causing a danger for pedestrians. When the leaves are out the lamp light struggles to get through – an
officer visited once to have a look and he couldn't even find the light as it is that swamped by the tree.
"The column is also leaning, and the raised pavement not only makes it difficult for pedestrians but also causes large puddles when it rains
forcing people into the busy road to get around it."
