Caring Cross Gates residents have raised hundreds of pounds to help a family grieving a lost loved one.
Hundreds of pounds were raised in tribute to teenager Shaun Martin, who was found dead in his bedroom last December.

It appeared the 16-year-old had stabbed himself in the heart. There were no suspicious circumstances.

Immediately after Shaun's death, cards, as well as floral and verbal tributes started pouring in to his home in Thornfield Way.

Shaun, described by his brother Antony as "a cheeky chappie of the streets," was said to be hugely popular in Cross Gates.

Shortly after those tributes, Shaun's friends organised a collection for his family.

Within a couple of days, the total had topped £500. The money was put towards funeral costs.

Shaun's mother, Deborah, said: "I'm really touched that Shaun's friends organised the collection and am even more touched that so many people have put in. They said they were only asking people who knew Shaun, but he was such a popular lad that is quite a lot of people around here.

"We all want to say a big thank-you to those that did the collection and to anyone who donated. It means a lot to us."
Antony also thanked people for their generosity.

He said his brother, a loyal Leeds United supporter, had left happy memories with many people from both the Cross Gates area and beyond.

He added: "So many people knew him and he made a big impression on them all. He would stick up for the underdog, he could not stand bullies.

"His star sign was Leo but his heart was even bigger than a lion's."
