Cross Gates laptop thief left DNA on paper
A reformed Cross Gates drug addict who stole a laptop from a Harrogate computer store was identified by DNA from a newspaper he dropped while making his getaway, the town's magistrates were told.
Dilwyn Hoare, 30, of Poole Square, pleaded guilty to stealing the £499.99 laptop from PC World at Plumpton Park on August 22.
And when he denied the theft of toiletries worth £352.44 from a chemist's shop in Richmond's Market Place three months earlier, this charge was dropped.
Prosecutor Melanie Ibbotson said Hoare, who had a lengthy criminal record with convictions for 56 offences of dishonesty, had been seen acting suspiciously near a display of laptops before another customer spotted him making off with one.
When staff challenged Hoare he put the computer down and dropped a paper as he made off, which police used to identify him.
The court was told that since the offence, Hoare had kicked a heroin habit.
He was bailed until May 2 and told he had to continue to live at his present address and stay out of all retail premises across North Yorkshire.
