Cross Gates pensioner mucks in to help Leeds' green dream come true
An atheltic Cross Gates pensioner is helping Leeds maintain its reputation as one of Britain's greenest cities.
Betty Furness, 81, joined councillors and heads of an international environmental charity to plants two trees in a site she chose, the grounds of Seacroft Congregational Church.
The tree-planting is part of a programme which will see thousands of trees planted in green spaces in Leeds.
It is a joint effort involving Leeds City Council, the charity Trees for Cities, and live music events group Festival Republic.
It began in September last year with a fund-raising Tree-athlon around Temple Newsam Park in Leeds. Participants, including Betty and her daughters and grand-daughter, took part in a 5km run, and made an "urban tree wish."
Betty said: "As a family we have spent many happy hours at Temple Newsam and Roundhay Park over the last 60 years. We are very lucky to have such wonderful places in our area."
