A thug who smashed the windsreen of a moving train as it passed through Cross Gates station at 80mph is being hunted by British Transport Police.
The driver had a lucky escape when an object was hurled at the First TransPennine Hull to Manchester Picadilly Express train he was driving when it passed through Cross Gates station.

The object, thrown from the York-bound platform at about 7.35pm on March 12, smashed through both the inner and outer skins of the train windscreen.

British Transport Police officers were called and carried out a search of the area in question, but there was no trace of any suspects. Officers are currently studying CCTV footage taken from the station.

The train had to be taken out of service.

Insp Tracy Metcalf, of the British Transport Police, said: "It's vital that we catch those involved in this incident.

"I cannot emphasise strongly enough the dangers associated with this type of crime. Throwing objects at trains is a form of criminal damage and we will arrest anyone found committing such an act."

Witnesses are asked to call Freefone 0800 405040.
