Sports clubs in Colton and Whitkirk are to share £800 worth of community grants to put towards the cost of new equipment.
Local Councillor Bill Hyde awarded funds to Colton Institute Cricket Club, Whitkirk Cricket Club, and Whitkirk Lawn Tennis Club to help the clubs make improvements for their members.

Whitkirk Cricket Club and Whitkirk Lawn Tennis Club will use the donations to help replace worn out equipment for their junior sections, whilst Colton Institute Cricket Club are raising funds for a new drainage system on their playing field.

Councillor Bill Hyde (Conservative, Temple Newsam ward) said: "I'm delighted that I could make these contributions to three of the sports clubs in my ward. Each club has a dedicated membership, and they are all committed to providing excellent facilities and equipment for the local community to use.

"Getting young people involved in sport is a great way to encourage exercise and a healthy lifestyle – habits that will hopefully stay with them throughout their lives. It's particularly important to support junior teams, as these help to ensure a bright future for sports clubs."

"I hope that these grants will help the clubs to buy the equipment they need, and that they all continue to provide a fantastic base for sports enthusiasts in the area," he said.
