Click here to read more about the construction of the Arndale Shopping Centre which began in the spring of 1966.
Once planning permission had been granted, construction of the Centre began in Spring 1966, the first of six such covered shopping mall developments to be built in Britain by Arndale Property Developments Ltd.

The whole development was planned and designed around a single L-shaped mall, connecting with two impressive frontages at Station Road and Austhorpe Road.

The Centre took 18 months to build, at a cost of £1.5 million, involving many workmen and craftsmen from right across the region. The plot covered 7.9 acres, meaning 135,000 square feet of shopping area.
