Celebrations planned for Centre's 40th anniversary
Crossgates Shopping Centre will be holding a raft of festivities next month as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.
Crossgates Shopping Centre first opened on 21 September 1967 as the all-new indoor Arndale Centre, causing quite a stir in local and national media for its sleek, modernist design and automatic sliding doors.
Based on the American mall, Britain had never seen its like before, but the concept of a complete high street shopping experience under one roof was quickly hailed a triumphant success.
The centre soon established itself as a central focus of the local community, featuring many exciting events in it s first year, including a boat show, motor show and visits from a whole host of celebrities such as the then Secretary of Defence and local MP, Denis Healey.
The ultra-modern look of Crossgates also attracted a certain amount of controversy, and it narrowly escaped a bomb plot and an arson attempt within its first 18 months.
Yet such was the Centre's popularity that the style was quickly copied and emulated, spreading like wildfire across the UK and into the rest of Europe.
"It's fantastic to be able to celebrate the centre's 40th anniversary," says Crossgates Shopping Centre manager Stephen Seymour.
"The Centre was constructed as a significant ground-breaker, offering maximum retail variety in an inviting environment for shoppers, whatever the weather. Hardly any wonder that 40 years on it's more popular and vibrant than ever before."
The Centre will be holding a special celebration, open to the public, in the Centre Square on Sunday, September 16, from 12pm until 2pm.
Special guests include the ex-Leeds and England footballer star Paul Reaney and Crossgates original beauty queen, Miss Arndale 1972. There will also be an exhibition on the shopping centre through the years, in conjunction with the East Leeds History and Archaeology Society.
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Alan Taylor, will unveil a special plaque to mark the 40th anniversary of the Centre, amidst performances by the Jemski Dance Group, Garforth Jubilee Band and local girl guides.
