Woolworths boasted a store on Briggate in the city centre for close on 60 years. It opened in December 1928 and welcomed bargain hunters for nearly six decades before closing in 1987. The store underwent a 'modernisation' during the early 1970s. Ten departments were found on the ground floor including the food hall, ladies wear, jewellery, travel goods and hosiery. The first floor featured the restaurant as well as five departments including bedding and curtains, furniture, rugs and mats, and lighting. Enjoy these rarely seen photos plucked from the YEP archive which turn back the clock to showcase the Woolworths shopping experience during the 1970s.
