After a difficult season with the loss of some players and mediocre performances Cross Gates Lions U-14s pulled out all the stops for their last four games of the season.
Following a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Pudsey on 13th April it was away to East Leeds, standing third in the table, on 16th April. Cross Gates played a defensive game trying to smother each East Leeds attack and hit them on the break.

Michael Brown broke the deadlock in the first half when he broke through to put Lions 1-0 up. It was then a nail biting second half as East Leeds pushed to equalize. A bit of luck, a fine save from Dominic Maskill and a good team performance allowed Lions to hang on to their lead. Player of the match Joe Bilbey

On 20th April it was away to Oulton Owls. At the end of the first half Cross Gates had a fragile one goal lead, but within minutes of the start of the second half Oulton had equalised. With Joe Bilbey moved from defence to attack this seemed to revitalise the Lions who stepped up a gear and ran out 8-1 winners. Player of the match, joint - Brett Rose & Alexander Elwen

On 23rd April Cross Gates hosted Ossett Albion, top of the league and unbeaten so far this season. Cross Gates again played the defensive game that had been successful against East Leeds. Ossett were frustrated by the defensive wall put up by Cross Gates but mid-way through the first half managed to breach it to go 1-0 up. In the second half though the Cross Gates counter attacks paid off with Michal Brown and Brett Rose both scoring for Cross Gates to win 2-1 in what, disappointingly, turned into quite a bad tempered game. Player of the match Alexander Elwen

Cross Gates' last game of the season was away to Kirkthorpe on 7th May. Kirkthorpe went 1-0 up in the first half but overall Cross Gates had had most of the chances but fine saves from the Kirkthorpe keeper had kept them at bay. In the second half Kirkthopre went 2-0 up but Cross Gates replied through Joe Bilbey before Kirkthorpe scored a third to make it 3-1. Michael Brown scored a second for Cross Gates and Joe Bilbey had a fine goal disallowed after being adjudged to be offside. Kirkthorpe were awarded a penalty after an alleged handball offence but a fine save from Dominic Maskill stopped them increasing their lead. A close match, but Cross Gates were very unlucky not to have anything to show for it. Final score 3-2. Player of the match Simon Smith.

Nine points from a possible twelve in the last four matches were still not enough to lift Cross Gates from seventh position but, more importantly, the team demonstrated the level of football they can play and the season ended on an extremely positive note.

Already though the preparations have to take place for next season with more players urgently needed to bring the squad up to full strength. Any players interested in playing at Under 15 next season should contact Mark Elwen on (0113) 2328800.
