Competition: Garforth League Under 14 Division 4

Cross Gates Lions started the new year with a home match against Leeds City Juniors, sitting just above them in the league.

Cross Gates went one up in less than a minute with a shot from Michael Brown being deflected in off the head of a Leeds City defender but Leeds City had levelled the score within the next five minutes.

Cross Gates again took the lead with a second from Michael Brown but not to be out done Leeds City levelled the score a second time. Dominic Maskill made a fine save only to see the rebound pounced upon by a Leeds City player.

Before half-time though Michael Brown, in his first game playing up front, completed his hat-trick with a third goal, a fine shot from the left at a very difficult angle to make the score 3-2.

In the second half Leeds City again equalised but Cross Gates replied through Joe Bilbey, moved from defence to attack, to reinstate the one goal lead. But this was not a match where any lead could be taken for granted and yet again Leeds City levelled the score with five minutes to go.

In the dying seconds though, Ashley Hullock bundled the ball into the net with his chest after the Leeds City keeper had been unable to hold onto the ball.

Final score 5-4 to Cross Gates Lions. Not a 'pretty' game of football
though both sides had spells of some good quality passing and movement.
This was more a game of grit and determination by both teams and Leeds City ensured that Cross Gates were not going to take the full three points without earning them.

Cross Gates Lions U-14s: Dominic Maskill (goalkeeper), Simon Smith, Martin Brown, Joe Bilbey (1), Andrew Battye, Luke Watson, Alexander Elwen (captain), Ashley Hullock (1), Josh Shaw, Michael Brown (3), Bret Rose, Alfie Leeds, Elliot Walls.

Man-of-the-match: Ashley Hullock.
