She's Whitkirk's own golden oldie athlete whose race career is a world away from the glitz and glamour of the Olympics.
But Moira Lenaghan's pals reckon she's every bit as deserving of a medal as any Brit going for glory in Beijing.

The 68-year-old has completed 10 marathons since she was bitten by the running bug at the age of 50.

And she's in no mood to hang up her trainers just yet – Moira has her sights set on lasting another 26-mile course after she turns 70.

The superfit grandmother-of-three said: "I think that would be my final one, although you never know, I could still change my mind and carry on!"

Moira, a retired home care assistant, took up running following the death of her husband, Jim, in 1990.

She tackled a 10k race just four months later – and by 1992 was competing in the London Marathon for the first time.

Her catalogue of impressive finishes includes sixth place in the over-65 women's section of last year's New York Marathon.

In a typical week's training, Moira clocks up between 25 and 35 miles – but when she is preparing for a marathon that figure rises to 50.

She still plans to find time, however, to watch Britain's long-distance queen Paula Radcliffe and the rest of the country's Olympic hopefuls in action on TV over the next fortnight.

"I'll definitely be cheering Paula on," said Moira, who is a member of both Kippax Harriers and Crossgates Harriers. "It would be lovely if she came back with a medal."
